Managing my storage space

I recently  paid £14 to increase the storage on my iPhone 3GS as I kept getting a message telling me i did not have enough storage space to update apps.

I still get the message and the only way to update my apps is to delete others!

Is this right? Have I wasted my money?

Advice please?
