Contacts in IPhone 5

I just purchased an IPhone 5 and while my contacts have synchronized I cannot determine how to view them under  "Groups."  When I touch the Groups button the groups are listed with a check mark, but when I touch a group name nothing happens except the check mark disappears.  How can I view and find contacts by group?
