why syncing photo folder use my computer's hard drive space

i am short on hard drive space, and when syncing a photo folder to my iphone5 i notice it is decreasing my available memory on my macbook hard drive as it syncs.  why is this?  is there a way i can go back and restore this hd space after the phone is done syncing (files to delete, etc.)?  Thanks.
