Iphone 4 wont restore

I am unable to restore my Iphone 4.  I went to update the firmware, and it said in Itunes there was a problem and I couldn't update my phone.  Now my phone is in a state that is asking me to plug in my phone to itunes, yet itunes will not recognize this.  I am not sure what to do here.
