When try to sync my iPhone with iTunes on my PC screen comes up has music square icons with music notes in squares. Not home screen am used to seeing shows all categories on left side

When I plug my iPhone into PC to sync, I am getting a screen with music squares with notes in the icon.  I was getting the iTunes home sync screen with the categories on the left side.  And it had options along the top as sync items.  It will sync, but I have no idea where the iTunes screen went. 

I also will get an error message that says "iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected".  But, it does back up and it is connected.  Any ideas out there as to what is going on and how I could fix this?  Thanks.
