updating of software on my iPhone 4 was interrupted

I was updating the software on my iPhone4 when the cable got pulled out and my iPhone froze on the loading screen. I reset it, and it showed the 'connect to iTunes' screen. I did this, and found that my iPhone is now in recovery mode and I need to reset it. Stupidly, I haven't backed up my iPhone for a long time, and I really don't want to lose all my pictures, notes & messages etc.

Is there any way I can get past this? Is the only option to restore it?Any feedback would be amazing!
