TS1702 after updating 2 apps all apps slowed and execution of app now slower. how get my iphone 4 back up to speed

i got notification of two updates, ny times and usa today, when i started installing these updates both would not finish. i clicked "done", turned off my phone and when i returned the updates were still their. i tried to update again and they did update but very slowly and all my apps are slow now, whether updating or executing. i did delete these 2 apps and reinstalled them to no avail, all is still slow. i have several updates in my app ready to install but if my phone gets any slower it will be almost unusable. i have searched for help on this but to no avail and of course i can not find any support or help from apple. anyone have an idea of how to fix?
