set up iphone 5 first or erase iphone 4 first

I will be receiving my iphone 5 tomorrow and am planning on giving my 4 to a friend.  I found links to the awesome article with instructions on how to set up new phone and erase old phone but am unsure which should be done first?  Any suggestions are appreciated
